Now how close was that?

On a feisty and excruciatingly intense evening at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, we fought valiantly against Sevilla with renewed gusto and flair only to squander our momentum due to shocking defending and missed chances. 

Sunday’s thumping win against Real Valladolid provided an oasis for the parched throats of Valencia fans, and thankfully ended a 4-month goal drought for Maxi Gomez too.

Well, that unravelled quickly. On a sultry night, debt-riddled, controversy-strewn and once-almighty Barcelona were there for the taking. And we nearly did. At the 50th minute mark and 1-0 up, we threatened to maraud our way through an increasingly frustrated and muddled Barcelona team.

Once again, it was the same old story for Valencia. Sleepwalk through the majority of the game, fall behind, wake up, and score a last minute goal to save our skins.

Our players emerged onto the pitch wearing shirts declaring “Earn It, Football is For The Fans”, in protest against the now-doomed European Super League. But no Valencia fan would have wanted to watch the football we dished up today.

It’s late in the season, the club sits in the middle of the table and there is little to play for. In situations like these, you either get a dull stalemate or a crazy swinger of a game.

In the end, it only took seven yellow cards, one red card, two penalties — one scuffed — and a moment of magic from Gabriel Paulista for Valencia to wrench a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Mestalla.
